The Saint John School in Ashtabula, Ohio has undergone a remarkable transformation to accommodate its growing K-12 student population. The school embarked on an ambitious building addition to add new classrooms, a cafeteria and auxiliary spaces to its campus. Faced with tight timelines and the need for a durable, energy-efficient building solution, the project team, led by Todd Nagy of Onyx Creative, chose Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs) from Nudura.

He stated that building schools with ICFs is:

"a game-changer due to its completeness, speed of construction and structural soundness."

The use of ICFs accelerated construction, with the building shell completed just before a severe snowstorm in November 2024, which could have halted progress if traditional masonry had been used. The ICF wall system not only met but exceeded energy compliance codes and ensured long-term cost savings for the school by reducing heating and cooling expenses.

Safety and sustainability were also key priorities. Robust ICF construction offers protection against extreme weather like tornadoes and snowstorms, while the integration of compatible building materials provided a high-performance building envelope from a single source.

These solutions from Tremco CPG Inc. included sealants, bucking and parapet caps from Tremco Sealants, roofing membranes from Tremco Roofing and exterior cladding from Dryvit

The Saint John School won the 2nd Runner Up Award in the 2026 ICF Builder Awards in the Education category.
